On Thursday 21 May, Coffs Coast Climate Action Group supporters took part in 350.org's national week of actions to Raise the Heat on Commbank.
The Commonwealth Bank is one of the biggest funders of fossil fuel projects in Australia. Right now, Indian mining giant Adani is calling upon The Commonwealth Bank to help them finance the Abbot Point coal port in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, the first step in unlocking nine mega coal mines in Queensland’s Galilee Basin. If these coal projects go ahead, they will wreck the reef and cook the climate.
Along with hundreds of other actions around the country and the world, we are calling on CommBank to rule out their involvement. It is their reputation on the line. Already, eleven major international investment banks have publicly ruled out involvement. Commbank needs to listen to the community and follow their lead.
At this action, CCCAG members wrote messages in a large card which was delivered to the Manager of the Coffs Central Branch of Commbank. We also handed out information to passers-by about Commbank's involvement in fossil fuel projects.
