Hundreds of people rallied on Jetty Beach Coffs Harbour on Sunday 29 November as part of global actions on the eve of major Paris climate talks. The atmosphere was amazing!
Thank you to everyone who came and especially to our speakers:
Uncle Martin Ballangarry
Jack Thompson
Sally Townley, Coffs Harbour City Councillor
Reverend Dr Jason John, Sawtell Uniting Church
Tu, representing the Pacific Islander community
Carol Vernon, Greens Candidate for Cowper
June Smith, Coffs Harbour Labor
And thanks to the Climate Choir (especially Kirsten and Annika!)
Great coverage in the Advocate here and on NBN here.
On this one weekend globally, 2300 events were held in 175 countries with over 570,000 people - and actions have continued throughout the Paris talks. Over 150,000 people attended the marches in Australia - the biggest climate marches in Australian history! This included 60,000 in Melbourne, 45,000 in Sydney, 10,000 in Brisbane and large crowds in Canberra (6K), Hobart (4K), Adelaide (6K), Perth (8K), Darwin (more than 500) and other regional towns. Here on the mid-north coast, there were actions in Bellingen, Scotts Head, Port Macquarie, Kempsey, as well as Coffs Harbour.
Momentum is building for real action on climate change. People are standing up to lead where our government is falling behind, and we will continue to do so regardless of the outcome at Paris.
There will be a follow-up post-Paris action in Coffs on Monday 14 December - make sure you are on our email list to get the latest details.
