COFFS TO JOIN GLOBAL CLIMATE MOBILISATION AS MAJOR UN TALKS APPROACH
As world leaders gather in Paris for the major United Nations climate summit, locals are gearing up to be a part of what is expected to be the world’s biggest ever people’s mobilisation for action on climate change. Coffs Coast residents will meet at Jetty Beach at midday next Sunday 29 November to add their voice to the hundreds of thousands expected to march in Paris and cities around the world.
“It is clearer than ever that climate change threatens our environment, our health, our security, our economy and jobs, as well as our land, food and water. But people here and around the world are rising to the challenge. With our Prime Minister and his government falling behind the rest of the world on climate action and the transition to renewable energy, our community is coming together to call for a better, safer, fairer future for all,” said Sarah Wood, local mother and organiser with Coffs Coast Climate Action Group.
The actions will call on global leaders to take necessary action to secure a safe climate, including a planned transition away from fossil fuels to 100% renewable energy. “We’re perfectly positioned to take advantage of energy from the sun and wind, so there is no excuse to keep burning coal and gas – especially given everything that’s at stake,” added Ms Wood.
“Our new Prime Minister has said he understands the need to tackle climate change, but the Government is still lacking serious targets and policies to rapidly reduce emissions, in line with the latest science. We’re calling on our local MP Luke Hartsuyker to take the community’s message to the Government.”
“We’re calling on everyone to join the Coffs rally, which will be a colourful, diverse demonstration of the widespread community support for action on climate change. Bring your friends and family - we’re all in this together!” said Ms Wood.
